Abstract: The author offers a brief synthesis of the procedures he made use of in his critical edition of Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo’s First Book of Amadis de Gaula, intended as a reconstruction of the archetypical text printed towards the end of 15th century, and worked in accordance with the canonical steps of textual criticism. So, in Recensio he treats of the Amadisian textual tradition direct and indirect, especially considering the manuscript folia of the exemplar Rés. B. L. 956 of the Seville 1526 edition. In Fontes criticae he explains why only Castilian testimonies printed in 16th century are useful for the Amadisian textual criticism. In Collatio he describes three different trends in Amadisian textual tradition, and considers the possibility of reconstructing the archetypical graphic pattern. In Classificatio he shows that there are inclusive and exclusive conjunctions of testimonies. In Constitutio stemmatis he states that this textual tradition divides in two branches of vertical transmission with several cases of horizontal transmission (contaminations). In Apparatus criticus, that the apparatus is an exhaustive one, that he divides it in two parts —segmental and suprasegmental—, and why he does so. In Constitutio textus he refers to methods of edition he made use of (Diffractio lectionum, Ratio archaismorum, etc.), and above all to the way of restitution of the original tonal form. In Emendatio, he brings some notable cases of apparent and no apparent emendation. In Dispositio textus, he defends the decision he took of giving a semipaleographical form to the edited text. Finally, he adds a new step to the above mentions, i. e. Philographia, in which he explains why a philologist ought to be also an artist and an artisan
