Los ritmos del convento : El silencio y el sonido en el ámbito monacal femenino medieval (Castilla. Siglos XIII-XV)

Abstract

Resumen: Dentro del universo femenino medieval la palabra y el silencio tienen especial significación y más aún dentro del ámbito conventual. A partir del análisis de las diferentes reglas y documentación nos proponemos acercarnos a la realidad sonora de los monasterios femeninos castellanos en la Baja Edad Media. En ellos el silencio prima pues es, en la concepción filosófico-teológica vigente, lo que permite la elevación del espíritu. Las reglas codifican dicha concepción, pero cuando la norma se materializa en las comunidades, éstas pueden no cumplir con el silencio exigido, ya sea por circunstancias internas o externas y en esos casos la autoridad intenta reformar, castigar o controlar el motivo por el cual se produce.

Abstract: Inside the medieval female universe the word and the silence have a special meaning and even more inside the convent scope. From the review of the different rules and documentation we propose to get closer to the sound reality of the Castilian female monasteries in the lower middle ages. In them the silence is established because is, in the valid philosophy and theology conception, what allows the spirit elevation. The rules regulate that conception, but when the norm materializes in the communities, these can not comply with the demanded silence, either because the internal or external circumstances and in those cases the authority tries to reform, punish or control the reason of this.
