Abstract: The expression “boundaries of narration” designates a heterogeneous group of elements with the function of mediating between the world and the text, defining the terms of literary communication and proposing reading strategies. It mainly belongs to what literary theory has called “perigraphy”, but also to the text itself, in the incipit and the excipit as contact zones. Even though books of travel have originated many critical studies, they have rarely been analyzed from the point of view of their boundaries. Drawing its conclusions from the analysis of twenty-eight Spanish works published since 1948, this article traces the modes and lessons of self-referentiality in books of travel, searching for the clues of an evolution in the concept and the practice of this genre throughout the last six decades.
