This book reconstructs the library of Diego de Anaya y Maldonado (1357–1437), royal counsellor, bishop of Tuy, Orense, Salamanca and Cuenca, archbishop of Seville and founder of the Colegio de San Bartolomé in Salamanca, the first colegio mayor in the Iberian kingdoms. Most of his books passed to the Colegio during his lifetime and through his will, and many of them are preserved today in the Biblioteca General Histórica of the University of Salamanca. The reconstruction rests on the fifteenth-century inventories of the Colegio kept in Paris (Bibliothèque nationale de France, ms. Espagnol 524), studied here systematically for the first time and transcribed in full in the documentary appendix. These are compared with Anaya's constitutions for the Colegio, his will, the codices themselves and later inventories of the eighteenth century. The first part studies Anaya's career in the service of the Castilian crown, his relationship with Benedict XIII, his role at the Council of Constance and his conflicts as archbishop of Seville, together with the documentary sources and the successive moments in which his books entered the Colegio: the books received in Cuenca and his donation of 1433, and the two stages of his testamentary bequest (1437–1438 and 1440). It then examines the contents of the collection and Anaya's place as an early promoter of humanist texts in Castile, linked to the book exchanges at Constance and to Italy. The second part offers an inventory of 391 entries, each identified, where possible, with a surviving manuscript, and states in every case the grounds for the attribution and its degree of certainty. About 270 manuscripts now in Salamanca are connected with Anaya's library, among them the Salamanca codex of the Libro de buen amor (ms. 2663), the Liber sancti Iacobi (ms. 2631) and Alfonso X's Estoria de España (ms. 2022). A final chapter discusses codices bearing Anaya's arms that were made after his death and did not belong to him. |
