The “Committee of Inquiry into Human Fertilization and Embryology” (1982-1984) authorized the creation, manipulation and destruction of human embryos until 14 days after fecundation. Thus, scientists involved in any research related to said issue obtained legal security. The Report [1] states that there are many techniques and procedures that involve the use of human embryos or their cells. And although it establishes limits and makes recommendations, it also proposes that they should be permanently revised as it is impossible to foresee all possible paths of development or research. And, indeed, the scope of research and tests has exceeded the limits foreseen. Hence, in the past as well as at the present time, public fear and anxiety exist regarding the truth and justice involved in such procedures. This paper is aimed at reviewing the development of the techniques and reassessing them for the society from the bioethical standpoint. |
