Donde los héroes fallan : tentación y deseo en los reinos lejanos del Libro del caballero Zifar

Abstract

Resumen: Como ha sido ampliamente estudiado, el “reino lejano” del folklore está vinculado con los ritos de iniciación y pasaje ancestrales, una serie de pruebas y experiencias que el individuo debía atravesar, en un ámbito distante y separado de lo cotidiano, como una forma de transición entre dos estados. En el Libro del caballero Zifar, el tópico se encarna de forma notoria en la ciudad subacuática del Lago Solfáreo y el imperio de las Ínsulas Dotadas. Es notable, no obstante, que en ambos episodios lo que se relata es el fracaso del héroe enfrentado a esa prueba extraordinaria y definitoria. El trabajo aborda el análisis de estos episodios desde esta peculiaridad compartida. Desde este ángulo, se tendrán en cuenta como aspectos fundamentales y complementarios: el modo en que el relato mayor recupera estos fracasos y los resignifica, transformándolos; la articulación de los reinos lejanos y los episodios maravillosos que los contienen con el mundo narrativo más amplio del romance; la forma en que la apropiación cristiana de lo maravilloso posibilita y determina estas operaciones; el lugar reservado al deseo y la tentación en esos reinos periféricos.

Abstract: As has been widely studied, the “faraway realm” of folklore is related to the ancestral rites of initiation and passage, a series of tests and experiences that the individual had to traverse, in a distant and separate ambit from everyday life, as a way of transition between two states. In the Libro del caballero Zifar, the topic is embodied in the underwater city of the Lago Solfáreo and the empire of the Ínsulas Dotadas. It is remarkable, however, that both episodes tell of the failure of the hero faced with this extraordinary and defining test. This paper addresses the analysis of these episodes from the perspective of this shared peculiarity. From this angle, several fundamental and complementary aspects will be considered: the way in which the major story dwells on these failures, resignifying and transforming them; the articulation of the faraway realms and the wonderful episodes that contain them within the broader narrative world of the romance; the way in which the Christian appropriation of the marvelous enables and determines these operations; the place reserved for desire and temptation in those peripheral realms.
