El gran vecino norteño : una aproximación a las relaciones de Uruguay con Brasil en la primera mitad del siglo XX

Abstract

Resumen: Las relaciones entre Uruguay y Brasil en la primera mitad del siglo XX no han merecido aún un estudio de larga duración, cuyo abordaje se ha visto dificultado por la falta de investigación de base para grandes tramos del proceso histórico. Pueden, no obstante, señalarse algunas grandes líneas interpretativas que se imponen a la hora de analizar este relacionamiento: los avatares de la política interna de ambos países, las reiteradas tensiones en las relaciones entre Uruguay y Argentina, la relación de ambos países con Estados Unidos y el sistema panamericano. El texto intenta una primera aproximación a alguna de estas líneas interpretativas, a partir de tres etapas significativas en la historia de ambos países y de su relacionamiento regional y mundial: la “era Río Branco” (1902-1912); la Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918); y la “Era Vargas” (1930-1945).

Abstract: Relations between Uruguay and Brasil during the first half of the 20th Century have not deserved yet a long term study, a job that has been hampered by the lack of primary research work. However, when analizing these relations, distinctly emerge some interpretative lines: the ups and downs of internal politics in both countries; the reiterated tensions experimented by Uruguay-Argentine relations; the relation of both Uruguay and Brasil with the United States and the Panamerican system. The present text tries an initial aproximation to some of these interpretative lines, studying them in three periods of time, which are important in both countries historical processes and in their world and regional position: the «Rio Braco era» (1902-1912); the First World War (1914-1918), and the «Vargas Era» (1930-1945).
