La resignificación de la historia republicana en Contra Symmachum de A. Prudencio

Abstract

Resumen: Aurelio Prudencio fue un prolífico poeta que contribuyó a difundir y defender el nicenismo del emperador Teodosio a través de su obra, caracterizada por la variedad genérica y métrica. El Contra Symmachum es un extenso poema hexamétrico dividido en dos libros, de controvertida datación, en el cual el poeta hispano exhibe entre vaivenes retóricos la necesidad de hacer frente al embate de un paganismo redivivo, representado por la figura del senador Símaco. En esta comunicación se analizarán las estrategias argumentativas de Prudencio, quien reutiliza la historia republicana romana para demostrar que los triunfos del pasado no son productos de las intervenciones de los dioses, sino de la virtus del pueblo romano preparado para recibir el ideario cristiano.

Abstract: Aurelius Prudentius was a prolific poet that he contributed to disseminate and to defende the Nicenism of the emperor Theodosius with his work, characterized by the generic and metrical variety. The Contra Symmachum is a long hexametrical poem divided in two books, of the controversial dating, in which the Hispanic poet displays between the rhetoric swings the need of confronting to the hardship of the revived Paganism, represented by the figure of Senator Symmachus. In this work, I’ll analyze the Prudentius’s argumentative strategies, who reuses the Roman Republican history for proving that the past victories are not the products of the divine interventions, but the Roman people’s virtus prepared for receiving the Christian ideas.
