After the coup of 24 March 1976, Argentina's military junta launched a systematic and clandestine plan of extermination while claiming to defend a «Western and Christian» order. Its leaders knew they could not make thousands of people disappear, many of them Christians, without the bishops, the Apostolic Nunciature or the pope raising their voices, at a time when the Argentine Episcopal Conference enjoyed great moral authority. If the Church's backing could not be secured, it had to be contained, so that the repression would not become public knowledge abroad in the middle of the Cold War. This book reconstructs the strategy the de facto government deployed toward the Church in order to legitimise itself and carry out its repressive plan. Drawing on the documentation studied in La verdad los hará libres (2023) and on sources published here for the first time, from the Archive of the Vatican Secretariat of State, the Laghi papers of the Nunciature in Buenos Aires, the Archive of the Argentine Episcopal Conference and declassified diplomatic records, the authors identify the successive stages of that strategy. Repression was first presented as state policy; there followed denial, the attribution of crimes to «excesses» by groups beyond the control of the security forces, the measured disclosure of information in confidential dialogue with the hierarchy and, after John Paul II's appeal in 1979, the admission of the disappearances before the Church. The murders of the Pallottine priests and of Bishop Angelelli, torture, the petitions of families and the figures of disappeared persons that Videla himself acknowledged to the nuncio Pio Laghi run through the book, which does not overlook the responsibility of those in the Church who took the most important decisions.es
