Generative AI (GAI) inherently possesses an ambivalent nature due to its capacity to execute highly complex cognitive processes with increasing proficiency. This capacity amplifies its substitutive function across unprecedented, original, and profound levels and dimensions. Understanding the current paradoxical state requires examining the phenomenon in its full conceptual depth. Regarding its impact on learning, GAI uniquely possesses the ability to both enhance cognitive processes and, conversely, constrain or impoverish them (the first paradox). Secondly, while GAI undoubtedly promotes the personalization of learning, it simultaneously depersonalizes and homogenizes it (the second paradox). Consequently, it expands the horizon of understanding by incorporating new cultural forms and expressions which, paradoxically, limit, bias, or direct the apprehension of the world through their own stochastic tautology (the third paradox). Complementarily, GAI multiplies the threshold of individual options while exposing users to subtle or explicit forms of domination and panoptic dependence (the fourth paradox). Finally, GAI bridges access gaps while simultaneously widening them, thereby both reducing and exacerbating educational inequity (the fifth paradox). GAI thus reveals itself as both the primary ally and enemy of the educational endeavor. This is not merely because it is a tool that can be ‘well or poorly used,’ but because its very dynamics and operational orientation imprint and reinforce an ethos arising from the continuity of an instrumental paradigm of rationality that holds us captive still.
