Libros de caballerías castellanos: un género recuperado

Abstract

Los libros de caballerías castellanos constituyeron el género narrativo por excelencia durante los Siglos de Oro. Su éxito editorial multiplicó sus títulos hasta llegar a casi un centenar desde finales del siglo XV hasta bien entrado el siglo XVII. El hecho de que Cervantes y el librero Francisco de Robles eligieran este género para ofrecer un producto comercial que pudiera competir con el picaresco Guzmán de Alfarache es buena muestra de su pervivencia. El éxito del Quijote y su particular lectura en los siglos XVIII y XIX parecieron condenar a los libros de caballerías a las fronteras de la historia de la literatura. En los últimos diez años se ha producido un cambio de actitud de los lectores y la crítica, que nos permite recuperar este género y recuperar al Quijote como uno más de los textos que deben formar parte de su corpus.

Castilian books of chivalry were the most important narrative genre during the golden age of Spanish literature. Their editorial success multiplied their titles up to a hundred from the end of the fifteenth century to the middle of the seventeenth century. The fact that Cervantes and the publisher Francisco de Robles chose this genre to offer a commercial product to compete with the picaresque Guzmán de Alfarache proves its survival. The Don Quixote's success and its particular reception in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries seemed to condemn books of chivalry to the margins of the history of literature. For the last ten years there has been a change of attitude in readers and critics, which allows us to recover the genre and recover Don Quixote as another one of the texts that belong to its corpus.
