Nicht vs. sondern. El dilema beethoveniano y el himno de Europa

Abstract

Este artículo propone una solución más para resolver el dilema planteado por Beethoven en la Novena Sinfonía, mediante sus palabras agregadas al texto de Schiller: “O Freunde, nicht diese Töne! Sondern lasst uns angenehmere anstimmen, und freudenvollere”— “¡Oh amigos, no estos sonidos! Sino permítannos cantar otros más agradables y alegres”—. También, se bosqueja el camino seguido por el paneuropeísmo desde el Congreso de Viena hasta la adopción del Freudetheme —el tema de la alegría— como himno europeo y se analizan otros fragmentos de la sinfonía que convocan a la fraternidad universal.

This article proposes one more solution to solve the dilemma posed by Beethoven in his Ninth Symphony, through the words he added to Schiller's text: “O Freunde, nicht diese Töne! Sondern lasst uns angenehmere anstimmen, und freudenvollere”. It outlines the trajectory followed by Pan-europeanism from the Vienna Congress until the adoption of the Freudetheme as the European Anthem as well as it analyzes other pieces of the symphony that appeal to universal brotherhood.
