¿Por qué una teología latinoamericana de la imagen?

Abstract

Resumen: El culto a las imágenes y la performance festiva que se despliega en torno a ellas aparecen como rasgos fundamentales de la experiencia de fe de los pueblos latinoamericanos. Esto ha sido abordado principalmente como expresiones de “religiosidad” o “piedad popular”, términos que, en buena medida, desvían la atención respecto a la profundidad teológica presente en la veneración de las imágenes. En este sentido, la doctrina cristiana de la imagen reconoce en ella una expresión fundamental de la respuesta de fe a la revelación de Dios en Jesucristo. Esta doctrina fue formulada en el marco del VII Concilio ecuménico, y ha dado lugar al desarrollo de una teología de la imagen, que ha encontrado su principal desarrollo en el mundo ortodoxo, pero que a partir del siglo XX ha despertado creciente interés en el mundo católico. En el presente artículo artículo, una vez presentada la relevancia de la teología de la imagen para la vida de la Iglesia, se plantea la necesidad de explicitar la teología de la imagen que subyace en la experiencia de fe de los pueblos latinoamericanos.

Abstract: The cult of images and the festive performance that unfolds around them appear as fundamental features of the faith experience of the Latin American peoples. This has been addressed mainly as expressions of “religiosity” or “popular piety”, terms that, to a large extent, divert attention from the theological depth present in the veneration of images. In this sense, the Christian doctrine of the image recognizes in it a fundamental expression of the response of faith to the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. This doctrine was formulated within the framework of the 7th Ecumenical Council, and has given rise to the development of a theology of the image, which has found its main development in the Orthodox world, but has aroused growing interest in the Catholic world since the 20th century. In this article, once the relevance of the theology of the image for the life of the Church has been presented, the need to explain the theology of the image that underlies the faith experience of the Latin American peoples is raised.
