Amistades paralelas: Miguel Cané-Martín García Mérou / Jorge Luis Borges-Adolfo Bioy Casares

Abstract

Resumen: Miguel Cané y Martín García Mérou, escritores argentinos que vivieron en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX, coincidieron en la pasión por la literatura. Cané era mayor y en su relación con el amigo asumió el papel del maestro. En cambio, ya en pleno siglo XX, Jorge Luis Borges, en su célebre amistad con Adolfo Bioy Casares, se resistió a oficiar de maestro, y a pesar de tener más años que su amigo, prefirió ponerse a su altura y hasta tomar el lugar del discípulo. Las diferentes actitudes de estos notables escritores obedecieron no sólo a la idiosincrasia de los personajes sino también a los hábitos intelectuales de su tiempo.

Abstract: Miguel Cané and Martín García Mérou, Argentine writers of the second half of XIX Century, met in their passion for literature. Cané was older, and acted as a teacher in his relationship with his friend. On the contrary, already in the XX Century, Jorge Luis Borges, in his wellknown friendship with Adolfo Bioy Casares, refused to pose as a teacher, and although he was older than his friend, he chose being at the same level and even taking the place of a disciple. The different attitudes of these remarkable writers were due not only to their idiosyncrasy, but also to the intellectual habits of their times.
