Diario de la campaña de Urquiza a Corrientes en 1846 : anotado por el general Eugenio Garzón

Abstract

Resumen: El general Eugenio José Garzón Avellaneda es una interesante figura de la historia sudamericana que merece un mayor reconocimiento del que de hecho hoy tiene, fundamentalmente por su destacada participación en los ejércitos libertadores. Nació en Montevideo el 6 de septiembre de 1796 y ya a los 15 años comenzó como cadete del ejército, bajo las órdenes del Protector de los Pueblos Libres, el general José Gervasio Artigas, en lo que sería su primer paso en su larga y brillante carrera militar. Con él combatió hasta 1814, alcanzando el grado de teniente segundo. Dejó su patria natal para marchar con el general José Rondeau en el Ejército del Norte. Derrotados los patriotas en la batalla de Sipe Sipe, Eugenio Garzón y otros voluntarios, tras recorrer cientos de kilómetros de zonas áridas y montañosas, llegaron a la ciudad de Mendoza, donde él se incorporó al ejército libertador que preparaba allí el general José de San Martín. Cruzó los Andes, llegó a Chile y combatió a las fuerzas realistas alcanzando el grado de capitán. De allí se embarcó con el ejército sanmartiniano hacia el Perú para dar la batalla decisiva contra el bastión más poderoso del ejército español. San Martín, por solicitud de Simón Bolívar, envió refuerzos al ejército colombiano que estaba en campaña en el Ecuador. Eugenio Garzón integró esas fuerzas auxiliares y se destacó en las batallas de Riobamba y Pichincha. Fue distinguido por el Protector del Perú con la “Orden del Sol”. Cuando San Martín se alejó de la escena política, el ejército libertador al mando de Simón Bolívar completó la liberación del Perú y Alto Perú.

Abstract: General Eugenio José Garzón Avellaneda is an interesting historical character who deserves to be granted a place of honor in the history of the South American continent. He was born in Montevideo, on 6th September 1796. He fought under the orders of some of the greatest strategists of the southern continent in the nineteenth century: Artigas, San Martín, Bolívar, Sucre and Urquiza. Moreover, on account of this he is remembered as one of the pillars of South American Independence. When his homeland needed him, he left the Bolivarian Armed forces to join The Argentine-Uruguayan Troops that defeated, on 20th February 1827, the Brazilian Empire in the battle of Ituzaingó to later start the negotiations that would end with the creation of Republic of Uruguay. The picturesque Historical Journal of de Campaigns of General Urquiza to Corrientes in 1846 and 1847, found in the Uruguayan National Archives (Montevideo), is an important source of information of this complex period of the history of this River Plate region, in which the Confederation commanded by Brigadier Juan Manuel de Rosas has to simultaneously face not only the allied navies of the English and the French and the “unitarios” exiled in Montevideo, but also the “correntinos” under the command of the outstanding military general José María Paz. The sixth issue of the magazine Temas, includes the section of the journal concerning the 1846 campaign.
