Dentro y fuera de la elite capitular: relaciones conflictivas en el Buenos Aires de fines del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Resumen: los cargos del Cabildo de Buenos Aires eran desempeñados por una “elite capitular” que fundaba su poder en el comercio, en el prestigio social y que, ocupando cargos de República, tenía poder político. Estos actores se relacionaban a través de vínculos duraderos de tipo social y económico, sobre los cuales asentaban sus negocios y aumentaban sus patrimonios. No obstante, no todo eran buenas relaciones en su seno, ya que también existían diferencias y enfrentamientos entre sus integrantes. En ese contexto, expondremos una controversia generada en el interior mismo de la elite capitular y analizaremos su impacto en la geografía política, a partir de las acciones del Virrey y del Cabildo porteño. Nos ubicaremos, para ello, en Buenos Aires, entre los años 1786 y 1787.

Abstract: the positions in the board of the Buenos Aires City Hall (the Cabildo), were carried out by a political elite called “capitulares”, who based their supremacy throughout the commercial and social relationships, and who used the “republic” service to gain political power. The members of the elite had a long time relationship economically and socially founded, through which they based their personal business and increased their patrimonies. However there were no good relations at all in their sine. There were differences and confrontations between their members. In that context we’ll expose the controversies generated in inside of these political elite, analyzing its impacts in the political background trough the actions between the viceroys and the Cabildos in the years 1786 and 1787.
