La disputa por la argentinidad : rupturistas y neutralistas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial

Abstract

Resumen: La Primera Guerra Mundial suscitó un intenso interés y un vasto activismo en la sociedad argentina, proverbial receptora de inmigración. La opinión pública se polarizó entre los partidarios de los aliados –proclives a la ruptura de relaciones diplomáticas con los Imperios Centrales– y los partidarios del mantenimiento de una estricta neutralidad, posición adoptada por el gobierno argentino. Al calor del conflicto se fueron delineando dos identidades políticas diferenciadas que ofrecieron interpretaciones diferentes del nacionalismo, en pleno auge durante el período de entreguerras. Este trabajo se propone analizar las ideas de nación subyacentes a las posiciones de los rupturistas y de los neutralistas, y su respectiva interpretación del tipo de relación que debía mantener la Argentina con Europa y con los Estados Unidos.

Abstract: The first World War caused an intense interest and a vast activism of Argentinean society, proverbial recipient of immigration. Public opinion polarized between the Allies supporters –inclined to the breaking-off of diplomatic relationships with the Central Empires– and the advocates of the maintenance of strict neutrality, position adopted by the Argentine government. During the conflict development, two different political identities taking were shape, which offered different interpretations of nationalism, at its peak during the interwar period. This paper intends to analyze the ideas of nation underlying the positions of the breaking–off and the neutrality supporters, and their respective interpretation of the kind of relationship that Argentine should maintain with Europe and the United States.
