Carta de Misiones : sobre la música jesuítico-guaraní en 1651 y su investigación actual

Abstract

Resumen: Una carta proveniente de las reducciones jesuíticas de Guaraníes, sin fecha ni firma, es tal vez el más raro de los documentos sobre música jesuítica que han sobrevivido. Este artículo identifica su autor y propone una fecha tentativa y un posible lugar de origen. La carta confirma que, hacia 1650, la práctica musical de las reducciones era básicamente de naturaleza hispánica, con la participación de cantores, vihuelas de arco y vientos, pero no todavía el arpa. Muestra también grandes contrastes en el nivel técnico alcanzado por las distintas misiones, y revela la participación activa de jesuitas que no eran músicos, en el gobierno de los grupos guaraníes. El artículo argumenta en pro del valor de la investigación heurística, cuando se la complementa exitosamente con una etapa hermenéutica.

Abstract: An undated, unsigned letter from the Guarani missions perhaps is the rarest of all surviving documents about Jesuit music. This article identifies its author and proposes a tentative date and a possible place of origino The letter confirms that, around 1650, the musical practice of the reducciones was basically Hispanic in nature, and included singers, viols, and woodwinds, but not yet the harp. The document also shows starch differences in the level of musical accomplishment among different missionary towns, and discloses the active participation of Jesuit non-musicians in the management of the Guarani groups. The article argues for the value of heuristic research, when complemented with a sound hemeneutic stance.
