Abstract: The aim of this research is to analyze the productive reading made by the art historian and philosopher Gottfried Boehm, a disciple of Hans-Georg Gadamer, of the thought of Martin Heidegger. Boehm is far from being a mere commentator on the philosophy of the Freiburg professor or a „Heideggerian.“ Neither is he a social scientist seeking to „apply“ Heideggerian art theory to art history. My hypothesis is that Boehm‘s philosophical proposal, without losing originality, makes use of some elements of Heideggerian thought that allow him to develop central concepts. Mainly I will focus on what was developed by the art historian in Wie Bilder Sinn erzeugen, although reference will also be made to other texts by the author. I will trace this dialogue with Heidegger on three key ideas of Boehm: 1. the relationship between the image, the world and meaning; 2. the iconic difference and; 3. the indeterminacy of the image. |
