Abstract: The Sevillian Demanda (1535) is a Castilian translation of most of the French Post-Vulgate, the last cycle of Arthurian prose romances. The first of his two books provides a version of the second section of the Post-Vulgate, the Estoire de Merlin, while the second book does the same with the third one, the Queste del saint Graal. Without any external mark of that, the final chapters of the volume correspond to the epilogue of the cycle, a concise Mort Artu. This concision is only visible when the Castilian text is placed in parallel to another romance concerning the end of Arthur, La mort le roi Artu, last branch of the Vulgate cycle; in fact, Post-Vulgate Mort Artu is nothing but a reworking of the earlier Vulgate Mort Artu. This article will examine the Castilian reception of one of the most important episodes in both French romances, the death sentence to Guinevere; the version contained in the Portuguese Demanda do santo Graal will also be taken into account.
