La relación entre sentencia y proverbio en la retórica de Aristóteles

Abstract

Resumen: El presente artículo aborda la relación existente entre las gnômai y las paroimíai en la Retórica de Aristóteles, teniendo en cuenta que este au-tor fue quien por primera vez sistematizó el uso de las primeras en el discur-so retórico, definiéndolas técnicamente. Para establecer la relación entre uno y otro tipo de enunciado, partiremos de la afirmación de 1395a12 acerca de que, en determinadas circunstancias, un proverbio es una sentencia: ἔτι ἔνιαι τῶν παροιμιῶν καὶ γνῶμαί εἰσιν (“incluso algunos proverbios son también sentencias”). El análisis se desarrolla, en primer lugar, a través del estudio de las gnômai tal como se las presenta en el libro II de la Retórica. En segundo lugar, se realiza un relevamiento de las paroimíai del libro I. Finalmente, se establecen semejanzas y diferencias entre ambos tipos de enunciado.

Abstract: This article addresses the existent relationship between gnômai and the paroimíai in Aristotele’s Rhetoric, having into consideration that this author was the first one to methodize the use of gnômai in rhetoric speech, defining them theoretically. To stablish the relationship between one and the other type of statements, we will start with the confirmation done in 1395a12 about the fact that, in some circumstances, a proverb is a sentence: ἔτι ἔνιαι τῶν παροιμιῶν καὶ γνῶμαί εἰσιν (“even some proverbs are sentences too”). First, I take the gnômai in the form they are presented in Rhetoric II. Sec-ondly, I make a survey of the paroimíai from book I. Ultimately, I remark similarities and differences between both types of statements.
