El ciudadano romano en los últimos tiempos de la república : nuevas representaciones

Abstract

Resumen: en el presente trabajo nos proponemos indagar cuáles son las nuevas representaciones del ciudadano romano que se construyen en los últimos tiempos de la república (siglo I a.C), a través de distintos discursos sociales de carácter literario, centrándonos específicamente en De officiis de M. Tulio Cicerón y Catilinae coniuratio de C. Salustio Crispo. Analizaremos, para ello, las variadas actualizaciones del concepto de civis en su vinculación con el contexto histórico-político del siglo I a.C., momento de crisis político-institucional que afecta todos los órdenes de la sociedad. La crisis socio-político-institucional genera, por un lado, cambios en las representaciones del civis Romanus –aparece una nueva imagen de ciudadano, distinta de la que tenía vigencia en el pasado– y, por otro, impulsa la escritura de textos que reflejan estas nuevas imágenes.

Abstract: In this paper we attempt to investigate about the new representations of the roman citizen which are built up in the last times of the Republic (1st century BC), throughout different social discourse, in literature, paying specific attention on De officiis by M. T. Cicero and Catilinae coniuratio by C. Sallust Crispus. We will therefore analyze the various updated versions of the concept of civis in its relationship with the historical-political context of 1st century BC, a period of political-institutional crisis which affects every aspect of society. The socio-political-institutional crisis generates, on the one hand, changes in the representations of the civis Romanus –a new image of the citizen appears, different from the one prevailing in the past– and, on the other hand, it encourages the writing of texts which reflect these new images.
