Esperanza: de la ambigüedad a la paradoja

Abstract

El presente artículo pretende señalar el carácter ambiguo de la esperanza en la cultura griega (y también romana) antigua, compararla con la concepción del pueblo hebreo y su herencia en el planteo cristiano, para señalar luego cómo la esperanza en los autores cristianos -clásicos y contemporáneos- supera dicha ambigüedad, pero manifiesta algunas notas paradojales: el carácter conocido y a la vez ignorado de su objeto, la relación de la esperanza con la tridimensionalidad temporal (haciendo presente el futuro y dando cumplimiento al pasado) y la particular dialéctica entre actividad y pasividad que implica cuando se entiende a la esperanza desde la perspectiva de la gracia.

This article aims to highlight the ambiguity of hope in ancient Greek (and also Roman) culture, to compare it with the conception found in the Hebrew people and its legacy in the Christian tradition, and then to show how hope in Christian authors—both classical and contemporary— overcomes this ambiguity, while nonetheless displaying certain paradoxical features: the known and yet unknown nature of its object; the relationship of hope to the three dimensions of time (making the future present and fulfilling the past); and the particular dialectic between activity and passivity implied when hope is understood from the perspective of grace.
