Lo visible y lo invisible: notas para pensar el lugar de la iglesia católica en la disciplina de las relaciones internacionales

Abstract

En el artículo examinamos, de modo preliminar y exploratorio, el lugar de la Iglesia Católica en la disciplina de las Relaciones Internacionales, evaluando su tratamiento teórico y empírico. A nivel teórico, identificamos que los enfoques predominantes, estatocéntricos, materialistas y naturalistas, han relegado a la Iglesia, dada su naturaleza no estatal y los factores inmateriales (espirituales) que son clave al momento de estudiarla. A nivel empírico, observamos, que la Iglesia ocupa una posición intermedia en términos de cantidad de publicaciones académicas, superando a pequeños estados y otras religiones, pero lejos del protagonismo de los grandes estados y organizaciones internacionales más influyentes. El estudio del estatus en ambos niveles permite argumentar que la Iglesia, aunque históricamente relevante, continúa siendo relativamente subestimada como objeto de estudio.

This article undertakes a preliminary and exploratory examination of the place of the Catholic Church within the discipline of International Relations, focusing on its treatment at both the theoretical and empirical levels. Theoretically, we identify that the dominant state-centric, materialist, and naturalist approaches have tended to relegate the Church, given its non-state character and the immaterial (spiritual) dimensions that are essential to its study. Empirically, we find that the Church occupies an intermediate position in terms of the volume of academic publications: it surpasses small states and other religions, yet remains far from the prominence enjoyed by major states and the most influential international organizations. Considering its status across both levels, we argue that the Catholic Church —despite its historical significance— continues to be relatively underestimated as an object of study in the field of International Relations.
