Otra mediación: la belleza, otro lenguaje: la imagen

Abstract

Resumen: El artículo plantea el tema del lugar que damos al trascendental “belleza” y al lenguaje de las imágenes en la reflexión teológica y en el quehacer pastoral de la Iglesia. Durante muchos siglos se han privilegiado en dicho pensar y hacer, el “bien” y la “verdad”, así como los conceptos abstractos, “claros y distintos”. Sin embargo, esta mediación y este lenguaje tienen un lugar importante en la historia de la salvación. También se aducen fundamentos teológicos: el misterio de la encarnación y la condición sacramental de la Nueva Alianza. Esto adquiere relevancia en la actual civilización de la imagen y ante la sensibilidad posmoderna. Hay también algunos hechos de la vida y la tradición de la Iglesia que favorecen estos estilos: el lugar de la humanidad de Cristo en la espiritualidad, la contemplación, la liturgia con sus desafíos propios, así como la necesaria pedagogía y discernimiento para ellos. La reflexión desemboca en cuestiones que se refieren más específicamente a la ciencia teológica enfocada en esta perspectiva.

Abstract: The article searches for the place of “beauty” as a transcendental property, as well as the place of the language of images in theological thought and pastoral activity of the Church. During many centuries, “goodness” and “truth” were taken much more into account, as well as abstract, exact concepts. Yet image language and beauty have a very important place in the History of Salvation. The paper presents theological foundations: the mystery of Incarnation and sacramentality in the New Testament. This approach is relevant in today’s Image Civilization and postmodern sensitivity. Several facts in the life and tradition of the Church favor this style: the place of the humanity of Christ in spirituality, contemplation, liturgy, and the need to discern how to convey the message. Our reflection ends with some specific items on theology from this perspective.
