Le Tristan en prose, ultime accomplissement des romans arthuriens

Abstract

Résumé: Ce travail analyse la complexité du Tristan en prose : d’abord les liens étroits du roman avec le cycle antérieur du Lancelot-Graal. Il montre par le texte et par les images les thèmes identiques, et notamment l’importance des combats chevaleresques, l’admiration réciproque et la rivalité guerrière de Tristan et de Lancelot. Mais il étudie aussi les innovations importantes qui s’y manifestent : modification du personnage de Tristan qui devient un chevalier errant et un membre de la Table Ronde recherchant les aventures et les combats ; thème de la souffrance amoureuse des rivaux de Tristan épris d’Yseut ; présence de la mélancolie ; motif des épanchements amoureux ; apparition du suicide ; longueur et importance des tournois chevaleresques avec les motifs de la dissimulation de l’identité et parfois du quiproquo ; brève mise en cause des combats chevaleresques et conscience des dangers de l’amour.

Abstract: This work analyzes the complexity of the Tristan en prose: first of all, the close links of the romance with the previous cycle of the Lancelot-Graal. It shows through text and images the identical themes, and in particular the importance of chivalrous combat, the mutual admiration and the warlike rivalry of Tristan and Lancelot. But it also studies the important innovations that manifest themselves in our piece: the modification of the character of Tristan, who becomes a wandering knight and a member of the Round Table seeking adventures and fights; the theme of the amorous suffering of Tristan’s rivals in love with Yseut; the presence of melancholy; the pattern of amorous outpourings; the occurrence of suicide; the length and importance of chivalrous tournaments with the motives of identity concealment and sometimes the misunderstanding; the brief questioning of chivalrous combats and the awareness of the dangers of love.
