El Concilio de Sens : un episodio del siglo XII

Abstract

Resumen: El artículo propone un reencuentro con el confl icto suscitado a mediados del siglo XII entre dos de las más relevantes fi - guras del Medioevo: Bernardo de Claraval y Pedro Abelardo. La leyenda ha enturbiado esta historia presentando una confrontación entre dos arquetipos: fe y razón, tradición y renovación, autoridad y espíritu crítico. A la luz de nuevas investigaciones, se recapitulan los acontecimientos y se destacan los matices que contribuyen a resignifi carlos. Se pretende concluir que el esquema interpretativo de un antagonismo férreo ya no es válido, y que, más allá de los personajes, debe visualizarse el episodio como señal de un cambio de época.

Abstract: The article suggests a reencounter with the confl ict that took place in the mid 12th century between two of the most important fi gures of the Middle Ages: Bernard of Clairvaux and Peter Abelard. The legend has marred this story by presenting a confrontation between two archetypes: faith and reason, tradition and renewal, authority and critical spirit. In the light of new research, the events are summed up and the nuances that contribute to their resignifi cation are emphasized. The idea is to conclude that the interpretative outline of a rigid antagonism is no longer valid, and that beyond the characters, the incident must be visualised as a sign of a change of era.
