La "conciencia inhóspita" y el demonio del mediodia

Abstract

Resumen: “Conciencia inhóspita” es la expresión con la que designa el filósofo chileno Umberto Giannini al elemento esencial que define la figura que surge en el ascetismo de los padres del desierto bajo el nombre de demonio del mediodía. El trabajo busca delimitar este elemento esencial tal como aparece en Evagrio Póntico y más tarde en el vicio de la acedia en el pensamiento de santo Tomás de Aquino. Luego mostraremos su vigencia en otros autores como Pascal, Emile Cioran, y en otros contextos como en la literatura en la obra de Charles Baudelaire, o en la vida cotidiana en la cultura contemporánea, ámbitos todos a los que también ilumina la luz del mediodía, bajo la que inicia, quizá en sintonía con aquel demonio: la hora de Zaratustra en la obra de Nietzsche.

Abstract: “Inhospitable consciousness” is the expression with which the Chilean philosopher Umberto Giannini designates the essential element that defines the figure that emerges in the asceticism of the desert fathers under the name of the noonday demon. This work tries to define this essential element as it present in Evagrius Ponticus’ works and as it is portrayed in Saint Thomas Aquinas’ thought as the vice of acedia. Then, the paper will identify its prevalence in the works of other authors like Pascal and Emile Cioran, in other fields such as literature in the work of Charles Baudelaire, and everyday life in contemporary culture. All those being areas that are also reached by the midday light, under which it starts, perhaps in tune with the noonday demon, Zarathustra's time in Nietzsche’s writings.
