Foucault on Adam Smith’s Liberalism

Título: Foucault on Adam Smith’s Liberalism
Autor: Salinas, Alejandra M.
Resumen: This article examines the interpretation of Adam Smith’s writings in The Birth of Biopolitics, where Foucault delves into market processes, the government’s role, the nature of economic knowledge, the dynamics of the “invisible hand,” and the complex relationship between society and the state. However, despite their shared interest in studying the forms of political power, the two authors differ significantly, since Smith espoused ideas that the French philosopher refused to endorse. It is the extensive readership of Foucault that justifies his inclusion in the study of contemporary receptions of Smith’s liberalism. We present Foucault’s lectures that deal with Smith’s ideas and evaluate the strengths and tensions in his analysis.

Título: La consulta popular en la Argentina. ¿Es constitucional convocarla para dolarizar?
Autor: Salinas, Alejandra M.
This article addresses the direct democracy mechanisms adopted in the latest reform of the Argentine Constitu-tion. The second section analyzes the nature, scope, and implementation of the initiative and popular consultation based on the new constitutional text. The third section evaluates the constitutionality of resorting to a direct popular vote on monetary matters and argues that it is admissible to convene one accor-ding to the provisions of Article 40 and the regulatory law.

Political Philosophy in Borges: Fallibility, Liberal Anarchism, and Civic Ethics

Título: Political Philosophy in Borges: Fallibility, Liberal Anarchism, and Civic Ethics
Autor: Salinas, Alejandra M.
Resumen: The political philosophy latent in Borges's works rests on the belief in a self-sufficient individual, the preeminence of liberty, a distrust of government, and nostalgia for anarchy understood as a self-organized order. Yet Borges also emphasizes the fallibility of individuals and warns against the civic indifference brought about by an isolated individualism. A paradox seems to emerge from these simultaneous convictions: would anarchy work if individuals are unable to do much in and by themselves? Can an individualistic disposition be conducive to a rich and orderly civic life? Borges's notion of fallibility is consistent with his defense of liberal anarchism because fallibility carries less pernicious effects under liberal anarchism than it does under alternative political arrangements. Thus, his notion of liberal anarchism is compatible with his concern for civic order if we look at the ethics of self-restraint that sustains Borges's simultaneous advocacy of a self-organized order and a stable civic life.
